“Is it still okay to have cuddles?”

Sorry I’ve been so quiet – Charlie Meyer Illustration and I have been working away in the background on my two new upcoming fully illustrated children’s books explaining cancer, cancer treatment and living with – and dying from – incurable cancer in words (very) young children can understand.

Elke Thompson new cancer book sample spread

Book One is based on our actual story, and is written from my daughter Olivia’s point of view, who was three at the time of my diagnosis in 2012. She finds out that Mummy has breast cancer, what it is, how it got there, and we follow her and her family through chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy and ultimately recovery.

Book Two is written from young Mia’s point of view, and we enter her life shortly before her Mum is being diagnosed with incurable cancer. It follows her and her family through living with, and ultimately sadly dying from cancer. Sensitively written in words very young children can understand, it encourages open conversations, hugs, cuddles, adventures and honesty, and while it is sad, it is also hopeful and uplifting. “It’s okay to feel sad, but it’s also okay to feel happy”.

I will be self-publishing again, and am hoping to have them out later this year!
